Policy

English is the language of instruction and communication at the Institute. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies in art therapy.

Applicants normally will be required to achieve a satisfactory score on a standardized English test acceptable to the Institute. This test must include a writing component.

KATI accepts the following tests:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems)

Any equivalent test must include a writing component and all test scores are valid for a period of two years from the date of the test.

The minimum graduate program admission requirements for test scores:

English Language Test Score
Internet-based TOEFL 93 with minimum of 20 in each category
Paper-based TOEFL 580 and TWE 5
IELTS (academic) overall band score of 7.0 of the academic (NOT general) test with a minimum of 6.5 in each section

In addition to what is described in 'Admission Requirements' the following is required by International students:

Upon meeting admission requirements International students are required to pay 50% of tuition amount and related fees before a Letter of Acceptance is issued.

All required program documentation must have been submitted before the start of student's program, otherwise they will not be permitted to start.

Study Permit

To study at the Institute, International applicants must obtain a 'Study Permit' prior to entering Canada. Obtaining a 'Study Permit' is the applicants' responsibility. Additional information can be found at Citizenship and Immigration Canada, www.cic.gc.ca

If a student needs to extend their study permit they must contact the nearest Canadian Immigration Centre at least two-months before the expiry on the permit.

When an international student on a study permit has been dismissed or withdraws from a program for which a study permit has been issued, the Institute is required to provide notification to Citizenship and Immigration Canada within two weeks. A copy of the notification is placed in the student's file.

If an International student's study permit has been denied, the Institute will refund any monies paid.

Work Permit

An International student will need to obtain a work permit for any paid employment while in Canada. This can be obtained before or after a student enters the country from www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-coop.asp

Medical

International students should have adequate medical insurance when they arrive. International students who have been granted study permits for six or more months must be covered under BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). Students should apply immediately upon acceptance in the Institute's program, as there is a three-month waiting period.
